Google rekindles Motorola legacy with X8 chipset - moorelilly1969

The decades-old legacy of Motorola as a semiconductor innovator remains alive, with Google providing its Motorola Mobility unit a fresh start in poker chip plan with the X8 chip systemwhich will make up utilized in the forthcoming Droid and Moto X smartphones.

The X8 (shown above), which is a software packag of processors in a chipset, is the kickoff in the line of chip designs that Google's mobile computer hardware unit hopes will make Android smartphones many baron-efficient and interactive, company officials said. Google's Moto X smarphone proclaimed Thursday

Having made servers, Google's no stranger to developing computer hardware in house, and the X8 allows information technology to tune hardware to Android and separate flying applications, said Dean McCarron, principal analyst at Mercury Research.

Motorola's X8 is a fair experimental design, but Google's backing allows the unit to think outside the box, McCarron aforementioned.

"When you have safe harbor, you are free to lead on more risk," McCarron same.

Competitive advantage?

Motorola could have a competitive advantage with its own chips, much like Apple, which has designed mobile processors in-theater, said Nathan Brookwood, principal psychoanalyst at Perceptivity 64.

But Brookwood pointed prohibited that the X8 design could have been more efficient. He said Google would deliver been amended off purchasing chips for the Droid and Moto X bump off the ledge.

The X8 chipset has four differentiate processors doing different things, only integrating those units at heart a single chip could take provided power and performance advantages, Brookwood said.

History

Motorola Mobility, which was spun off from the original Motorola, ultimately was sold to Google last year for $12.5 billion.

Motorola may have split umteen eld ago, but Mobility still has a good deal of semiconductor expertise and is in a good position to design newborn chips, McCarron said.

The company already has plenty of DSP expertise, and the future synthetic step would be to design its own CPU, McCarron said.

"Artful your own CPU is in currency right at present. That is what Orchard apple tree does, that is what Samsung does," McCarron said.

Only there are also challenges if Motorola decides to go deeper into chip design, Insight 64's Brookwood said. Motorola and Google testament need to sell plenty of smartphones to find the non-buoyant toll of splintering development.

"If you want to do your own custom chips these years at 28-millimicron, the be of designing and putting that chip into products is huge compared to what it was four to five years ago," Brookwood said.
